Introduction: The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) is an autonomous, international and inter- governmental post-graduate institution that promotes technological change and sustainable development in the Asian-Pacific region and beyond through higher education, research and outreach activities. Established in Thailand in 1959, AIT has become a leading regional postgraduate institution and is actively working with the public and private sector partners throughout the region and with some top universities in the world. It offers Master's and Doctoral degrees, diploma and certificate programs in engineering, science, planning and management, and serves over 2,000 students from many countries across Asia and beyond. The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) is looking for applications for the Legal Officer. The Legal Officer reports directly to the AIT President and works in close collaboration with the Vice Presidents. The Legal Officer will provide legal advisory, contract management, compliance oversight, and institutional legal support across all of AIT’s academic, administrative, research, and commercial activities. The role is pivotal to ensure that the Institute conducts its operations in accordance with applicable laws, institutional policies, international agreements, and highest standard of governance practices, while safeguarding AIT’s legal interests and reputation. |
Scope of Work / Job Description:
The Legal Officer will be responsible key duties but not limited to, the following:
- Legal Advisor and Institutional Governance:
- Provide legal advice to the AIT leadership, including the President, Vice Presidents, Office of the President and senior management on a wide range of legal matters.
- Support the development and review of institutional policies, regulations, and governance frameworks.
- Provide legal interpretation of status, regulations, and institutional policies affecting AIT operations.
- Assist in matter related to institutional legal compliance.
- Contract and legal documentation review and negotiate legal agreements to ensure that agreements adequately protect AIT’s legal and financial interest including:
- Review Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and Memorandum of Agreement (MoA).
- Review research collaboration agreements, student exchange and academic collaboration agreements.
- Review consultancy & service contracts, vendor & procurement contracts.
- Employment and consultancy agreements.
- Technology Licensing agreements.
- Innovation and startup agreements under Science parks or Incubators.
- Non-disclosure agreements (NDAs).
- Compliance and Regulatory Affairs to ensuring that the Institution operates in accordance with all applicable laws, regulations, standards, and internal policies:
- Ensure compliance with Thai Laws and regulations applicable to the Institute.
- Monitor legal developments affecting higher education institutions.
- Support compliance with regulating to:
- Labor and employ law;
- Intellectual property;
- Taxation and financial regulations;
- Immigration and visa regulations;
- Data protection and privacy laws;
- Coordinate with external legal counsel where required.
- Dispute Resolution and Risk Management to prevent potential legal issues and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations:
- Provide legal support in dispute resolution matters.
- Assist in handling complaints, grievance, and disciplinary proceedings.
- Support on legal risk mitigation and institutional liability management.
- Employment and Human Resource (HR) legal support to the provision of legal guidance and services to ensure that organization’s employment practices comply with applicable Thai Labor Laws and regulations:
- Review employment contracts and HR policies.
- Advise on Thai Labor Law matters including disciplinary processes and employee disputes.
- Support compliance with employment regulations and institutional HR policies.
- Institutional Documentation and Records:
- Maintain a repository of institutional legal documents and contracts.
- Develop standard templates for legal agreements.
- Ensure proper documentation and records keeping of legal matters.
- Ensure confidentiality and security of sensitive information.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in law (LL.B.) from a law school in Thailand or reputable university, and Master’s degree in law (LL.M., JD or equivalent) from a law school abroad is preferred.
- Have legal experience in practicing as a lawyer in an international law firm is preferred.
- At least 2-3 years of professional legal experience, preferably within an international organization or a higher education setting.
- Fluent in both written and spoken in Thai and English languages.
- Good communication and presentation skills, including ability to interface with executive management.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment and maintain a problem-solving attitude under pressure.
Licensing and Experience:
- A valid license to practice law in Thailand and in relevant jurisdiction.
- Proven experience in providing legal consultancy services to international organizations or similar entities.
- Deep understanding of Thai labor law, international law principles, and the governing frameworks of intergovernmental organizations.
- Experience in handling employment disputes and supplier/contractor conflicts.
Skills and Competencies:
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong background in dispute resolution and contract law.
- Experience with intergovernmental or international organizations or UN agencies is an asset.
