Application is invited for the position of Assistant Professor in Development Innovation and Sustainability with the focus on regional and rural development at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Pathumthani, Thailand. AIT is an international, non-profit post- graduate institution, promoting technological change and sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region through higher learning focusing on critical global issues through research and outreach capacity development. Establish in 1959, AIT became a leading regional institution actively working with public and private sector partners throughout the regional the region and with some of the top universities in the world. The institute offers Master and Doctoral degrees, a diploma and certificate program in interdisciplinary studies to students from different disciplinary such as sociology, geography, economics, engineering, science, planning and management, and serves over 27,000 students from Asia and beyond. Its teaching, faculty, research and students composed of more than 40 different nationalities and ethnic backgrounds from a unique international community in the institute’s residential campus situated 42 Kilometers north Bangkok. The Development Innovation and Sustainability (DIS) program at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) is an interdisciplinary program addressing complex development challenges in Asia and beyond. Aligned with the SDGs and the people–planet–prosperity nexus, it builds strong foundations in policy, planning, project management, and participatory practice. The program emphasizes systems thinking, innovation, governance, and sustainability, while addressing climate change, inequality, and socio-ecological transitions. DIS equips researchers, practitioners, and policymakers with the knowledge and skills to design, implement, and evaluate inclusive, resilient, and context-responsive development interventions across diverse settings. |
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Teach at graduate level classes (Master and Doctoral)
- Engage in thesis research supervision of Master and Doctoral students
- Develop research papers leading to publications on professional journal
- Take initiative in bringing sponsored research projects
- Develop and conduct public PPP related short courses, workshops and customized training program
- Develop cooperative links with other study areas for maintaining the competitive edge of PPP in the region
- Carry out consultancy and outreach activities
- Assist in conducting training/workshop and other human resource development activities supported by AIT or international/national agencies, and
- Perform academic duties assigned by the school/ institute.
Qualifications:
- The applicant should have an educational background in development economics, rural and regional development planning, or a closely related field (e.g., development studies geography or interdisciplinary studies), and should demonstrate research interest and experience in development planning and innovation, particularly in rural and regional development, preferably from reputable universities.
- Should have strong knowledge of statistics and its applications, and mixed-methods research approaches; knowledge of qualitative analytical techniques is an advantage.
- Should have a very good publication record in international referred journals.
- S/he should be able to teach core courses, such as, Development Economics and Policy; Social Innovation, Community Business and Sustainability; Social Impact Assessment; Development Planning Workshops; Quantitative Research Methods for Development; as well as other relevant courses aligned with the Development Innovation and Sustainability (DIS) program requirements and the candidate’s area of specialization.
- Should have a proven track record of published research in relevant fields.
- Should posse relevant experience and competence in teaching and student supervision at graduate level with excellent oral and written communication skills in English
- Experience in obtaining research grants is highly desirable
- Previous exposure to the problems and prospects in the Asian Region in addition to well established link with donors and research partners will be an added advantage.

Appointment: The appointment will be at the rank of an Assistant Professor. The initial appointment is normally for two years and is renewable based on performance. The salary offered to the successful candidate is regionally competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Additional benefits include provident, air fare for self and direct dependents and grant for settlement, education subsidy for dependent children, and medical benefit as per institute’s policy and procedure. It is also possible to earn an additional income by carrying out sponsored research projects and consulting services. Application procedure: The application deadline is on 5 April 2026.
