The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) is an autonomous, international and inter-governmental post-graduate institution that promotes technological change and sustainable development in the Asian-Pacific region and beyond through higher education, research and outreach activities. Established in Thailand in 1959, AIT has become a leading regional postgraduate institution and is actively working with the public and private sector partners throughout the region and with some top universities in the world. It offers Master's and Doctoral degrees, diploma and certificate programs in engineering, science, planning and management, and serves over 2,000 students from many countries across Asia and beyond.

The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) is looking for applications for the Dean of the Faculty of Business Management. The Dean is responsible for leading the Faculty administratively and academically as detailed in the following terms of reference. Furthermore, by considering the transformation as recommended by the AIT’s blueprint, the Dean has to implement the new academic structure, staff reassignment, finance consolidation and center collaboration as guided by the President and the Vice President for Academic and Research.

Terms of reference of Dean:

  1. The Dean shall be responsible for the administration of their Faculty in accordance with the Institute’s policies and procedures, as well as for the overall functioning of the academic and research programs in the Faculty.
  2. As chief executive officer of the Faculty, the Dean shall lead the Faculty and all its activities.
  3. The Dean shall be accountable to the President for the delivery of all education, research, consultancy and outreach activities of the Faculty, for marketing and promotional activities, and for internal Faculty management.
  4. The President can delegate his authority to the Vice President for Academic and Research (or Vice Presidents or their designees) on matters noted in item 3. above.
  5. The Dean shall represent the Faculty on specified Institute committees and management groups.
  6. The Dean can delegate authority to the Deputy Dean(s) or Academic Program Chairs.  However, they cannot relieve themselves from the responsibility for the action.
  7. The Dean will provide administrative and academic/research leadership, to prioritize research agenda and to motivate faculty members for innovation and creativity in research and education.
  8. The Dean should facilitate and help in creating a strong research culture and environment that will motivate faculty members for writing scientific articles in the top, impact creating journals and disseminate research findings to those who could put such findings to practical use.
  9. The Dean should develop research networks and strategic research partnerships with donors, public and private organizations. This will need them to explore and communicate with potential partners in consultation with the Vice Presidents.
  10. Research team building and research capabilities and capacity developments are also important roles of the Dean.  They should create a flexible, professional and positive working environment and structure.
  11. The Dean should collaborate with other officials of the Faculty and the Institute in identifying sources of funds and help in fund raising.
  12. The Dean is responsible for the execution of academic, administrative and financial management functions of the Faculty and its Academic Programs, such as the following, among others:

Faculty management

  1. Lead the management of the Faculty through the Faculty Management Committee;

Management and administration of the Academic Programs and its Degree Programs

  1. Prepare business plans for the Faculty and implement approved business plans;
  2. Coordinate academic programs of the Faculty;
  3. Review and make recommendations on proposed new academic programs of the Faculty;
  4. Coordinate the administration of sponsored research contracts, outreach and continuing education programs in the Faculty;
  5. Set business and financial targets for academic and research programs, consultancy, continuing education, and information dissemination of the Faculty;
  6. Initiate and manage Faculty financial transactions including budget preparation, revenue generation, expenditure management, in accordance with Institute budgeting and accounting procedures;
  7. Prepare progress reports of the budget and business plan of the Faculty and report progress according to AIT management guidelines;
  8. In consultation with faculty and staff members, arrange regular seminars of projects belonging to the research programs to evaluate research quality and timely delivery of outputs;
  9. Administer and manage the internal and external use of facilities allocated to the Faculty (request AIT support services for assistance in maintaining the academic and research facilities);

Student management

  1. Review the recommendations of the Academic Program Chairs on student applications, and for admissions and scholarship/fellowship allocations;
  2. Review the recommendations of the Academic Program Chairs on student progress and achievements each semester;

Human resource management

  1. Recommend (to the AIT Management) the establishment of faculty positions, contract renewals and promotions;
  2. Recommend the establishment of staff positions, appointments, promotions, and contract renewals;
  3. Review work performance of the faculty members, and administrative and technical staff of the Faculty, with focus on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), accomplishments and achievements and recommend course of actions;
  4. Oversee the organization of the secretarial and technical staff of the Faculty.

Qualifications:

  • The Dean candidate must be academically well-qualified, holding a minimum rank of Associate Professor in Business Management or related areas.
  • A strong communicator and interpersonal capabilities to enable collaboration across the Faculty.
  • Demonstrate professionalism in dealing with a diverse population while understanding and respecting each other’s view of the world, personalities and working styles.
  • Conduct oneself in a manner consistent with the Institute’s standards of ethical conduct.
  • Utilize effective techniques to build collaborative relationships with others to achieve shared goals; communicate openly and work together to reach objectives.
  • Demonstrate skills necessary to look at situations and processes critically to make recommendations for improvement.
