Research Assistant

Center of Excellence in Nanotechnology

Applications are invited from highly-motivated researchers for a research assistant position at the Center of Excellence in Nanotechnology (CoEN), Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), one of the leading research centers in the field of nanotechnology, located in Pathumthani, Thailand. This position will be funded for one year from the date of hire with possibility for renewal. The position is open for all citizens.

Job Description:

The project deals with the development of a nanomagnetic adsorbent for the removal of chemical residues from water to clean and recover the water after chemical treatments. The cleaned water can be then used for other industrial or agricultural activities, and with further purification drinking quality water can be produced. The research will lead to an innovative way to produce clean water from industrial waste with a significant socio-economic and environmental impact and it will also lead to new sustainable business ideas. The project is funded by The Royal Academy of Engineering (RAE), UK, The National Science & Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), Thailand and Circularity Pte. Ltd., Thailand.

The successful candidate is expected to conduct research on modification of magnetic nanoparticles to adsorb chemical residues present in water and assist to develop a nanomagnetic flow system prototype for water recovery. The candidate will get the opportunity to work in an international research team.

Duties & Responsibilites

The research assistant will be responsible for:

  • Surface modification of magnetic nanoparticles to make them suitable for the adsorption of various chemical residue present in water
  • Characterize the nanomagnetic adsorbent using techniques like electron microscopy, FTIR, atomic absorption spectrometer, X-ray diffraction etc.
  • Analyze data and prepare report
  • Assist in the development of a lab-scale prototype of the nanomagnetic water recovery system
  • Assist and work together with a postdoctoral researcher to carry out various related research activities
  • Assist in the coordination and management of center interactions, including preparation of reports for research sponsors, and scientific outreach to the professional research community.

Minimum Requirements:

Candidates for this position must have:

  • A master’s degree in Physics, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a closely related field by the time of hire. Candidates with a bachelor’s degree having relevant research experience of at least 3 years may also apply.
  • experience in synthesis and handling of nanomagnetic adsorbents is a plus - experience working with various nanomaterial characterization techniques - a strong record of related research and experience as evidenced by publications list (preferable)
  • excellent communication skills and ability to work as part of a team
