The Department of Food, Agriculture and Bioresources (DFAB), School of Environment, Resources and Development (SERD) is implementing a long-term research Project (Agro-Met) supported by the Regional Integrated Multi-Hazard Early Warning System for Africa and Asia (RIMES) with the objective to establish collaboration for enhancing agro-meteorological early warning services in RIMES member countries.

1. Duties/Responsibilities

The Data Visualization Expert is responsible for developing the visual interface and the dashboard of a Knowledge Hub for a functional Meteorological Data visualization, Forecast and observation data integration, weather forecast Verification modules in collaboration with the Web Application Developer. S/he will support the development team in the design and development of the Knowledge Hub in the first 12–18 months of project implementation. The Data Visualization Expert will co-lead the development of the Knowledge Hub, especially the visual interface of the platform. The work will be primarily focused on the activities related to the Work Packages assigned to the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT). The Web Application Developer will work under the direct supervision of Dr. Avishek Datta from AIT and in close collaboration with Dr. Itesh Dash from RIMES. Specific responsibilities will include:

  • Work closely with the Principal Investigator of the project, and other members of the project team to provide developmental support for the Knowledge Hub
  • Design and develop the Knowledge Hub architecture, modules, functionalities and analytics, graphical user interface, visualization
  • Develop the data management modules and integrate relevant readily available global/regional/national datasets into the platform
  • Develop and design the graphical user interface of the Knowledge Hub with high charts, graphs, trends, patterns, clustering, spatial layering
  • Support outreach events (e.g., virtual knowledge sharing series, hackathons) co-organized by RIMES and other concerned agencies/organizations
  • Assist in the development of virtual helpdesks, videos, and other materials related to the Knowledge Hub
  • Participate in discussions, meetings, and consultations with the National Meteorological and Hydrological Service
  • Other relevant work for the project as assigned by the Principal Investigator of the project, and other members of the project team

2. Qualification

  • Master degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science or related field

3. Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

  • At least 5 years of experience in software/database development and management, and analysis tools
  • Strong GIS skills (desktop, online versions) and knowledge of OGC standards and Open APIs and google earth engine
  • Experience with development of interactive visualization dashboards, portals, and mobile Apps based on online/cloud services for data and analytics
  • Proven experience as a Data Scientist or data mining or similar role with solid understanding of supervised, unsupervised learning, clustering, artificial neural networks
  • Experience using distributed data and computing tools, such as MapReduce, MySQL, Hadoop, Spark, Hive
  • Experience with user interaction for systems requirement, collaborative design, and feedback
  • Experience in diverse database design (MySQL, Microsoft SQL, or NoSQL), and various Linux/Unix distribution platforms
  • Experience in internal abstract data visualization including reporting, dashboarding, and presenting real-time analytics to enable smart decisions
  • Experience in creating and editing visual content including maps, charts, and graphs
  • Demonstrable leadership abilities
  • Excellent analytical skills and problem-solving ability
  • English proficiency in communication, presentation, and report writing
  • A knack for statistical analysis and predictive modeling
  • Self-motivated, with ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines, and manage changing priorities
  • Flexibility and ability to work hard independently and in a team
  • Excellent work ethic and ability to work with a constructive attitude in multi-cultural teams
  • Good communication (written, verbal, and presentation) skills in English

4. Remuneration

  • Salary and benefits of AIT are competitive compared with other regional organizations

5. Contract Duration

  • The contract will be for an initial period of 1-year subjected to an annual performance review. The contract would likely to be extended beyond the 1-year period depending on the satisfactory performance of the candidate
