I. BACKGROUND

AIT’s Strategic Plan 2013 emphasizes the consolidation of research efforts and creation of a niche that will harness the Institute’s range of network, experience and expertise. Sustainable development has been central to AIT’s research and development efforts since its inception. The Institute has responded rapidly to the new challenges the region faces. Climate change is a global challenge and concerted trans-disciplinary efforts are required to develop new adaptation and mitigation strategies which will provide local communities more resilience while leading towards a more sustainable society.

The Institute is committed to work towards this by forming strong teams and networks and working in a collaborative manner with all stakeholders. The Institute continues to pursue its role as a leading center of knowledge production in the region.

The goal of the AIT Center of Excellence for Sustainable Development in the Context of Climate Change (SDCC) is to consolidate the Institute’s research efforts and broaden the networks and partnerships by providing a platform to discuss and launch shared initiatives and pool resources to effectively address issues and challenges in sustainable development and climate change. The thematic research areas aim to stimulate the formation of teams that merge knowledge, experience and networks.
