Project:          Sustainable Decentralized Wastewater Management in Developing Countries: Design, Operation, and Monitoring

Background:In developing countries, the sanitation systems such as single pit, double pits, septic tanks are the most common solution and current sanitation service provided to the community. However, these systems currently in use are most likely to malfunction as the lifespan of the systems are unknown, poor design and construction lead to the system leakage, over-flushing results in hydraulically overloading and flooding, and poor maintenance such as desludging is done only when the toilet cannot be flushed. Such problems, the Environmental Engineering and Management of Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) has entrusted by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to undertake a project entitled “Sustainable Decentralized Wastewater Management in Developing Countries” led by Dr. Thammarat Koottatep to reinvent the innovative decentralized systems and technologies for full or partial treatment, and disposal of human excreta and wastewater from dwellings and businesses close to the sources.

General Job Description:             

  • Carry out an assessment of DEWAT and FSM comprehensive reviews and work with research team on investigations of the existing treatment technologies and potential novel systems known as Technology Landscaping including: (i) problem identifications; (ii) technology bottlenecks and application stumbling blocks and (iii) user’s demand on toilet types, DEWAT systems and fecal sludge management (FSM) practices.
  • Ensure wide dissemination of project findings and represent the project/AIT in relevant meetings and events
  • Prepare reports and other project deliverables individually
  • Assist faculty in the conduct and supervision of course and workshop

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D degree and hands on experience in sanitation/environmental research
  • Good knowledge on onsite treatment system, faecal sludge, or wastewater or faecal sludge treatment system
  • Experience in data interpretation and writing skills are advantage
  • High proficiency in basic computer software such as Microsoft Office
  • Motivation and capacity of work in field survey are desirable
  • Excellent command in English language, both oral and written
  • Excellent report writing and presentation skills
  • Planning and Organizing: Ability to work under pressure and monitor own work plan to achieve the successful completion of a given task
  • Ability to work together with the team mates, and willingness to learn from others and teach others

Contract period:                            1 Year

Salary:                                                41,000 Baht/month up
